Football Gift
On their last trip to the Gambia Phil and Joan Feller shared the good news that the UK Parliamentary Football Club (UKPFC) had given £2,500 towards the provision of a purpose built goal ball court. This means that the dream of having a place where the children can play football safely with not so many cuts and bruises is closer to becoming a reality, Phil said.
The children presently play football with a soft ball containing a bell, in old donated kits and with soft shoes on a rough mud pitch with tape marking the boundaries. The head teacher, Ali Sallah, and the Friends of Govi's trustee in the Gambia, Lamin Saidy, are working on plans for the court. It will also be necessary to gain the consent of Govi to have the goal ball court constructed in the compound beside the school.
Phil and Joan Feller went to London prior to their Gambia visit to receive the cheque for £2,500. This was presented to them by Tony Wright MP on behalf of UKPFC which is an all-party group of British parliamentarians based in Westminster (of which he is a member) and is sponsored by National Grid. The UKPFC has raised thousands of pounds for charities at home and abroad over the years.
Tony said: "It is always a pleasure to be in a position to donate to charities and knowing Phil and Joan's voluntary work in the Gambia with the visually impaired encouraged me to ask our football club to make a donation. I know the money will be put to good use."
