Sheikh Zayed Eye Care Hospital Visits (Ali Sallah, peripatetic teacher)

In February and March 36 children from the school were screened at the Sheikh Zayed regional eye care hospital.

A thank you for Braille and audio story books (Phillip Feller, JULY 2008)

Thousands of Braille and audio books have been sent to the school in the Gambia thanks to Nicky Searle.

New Online Donation Payment System (Carol Haynes, July 2008)

We have changed the payment system for credit card donations to Friends of GOVI. This is great news for Friends of GOVI as the Charity Choice service is provided entirely for free and there are no commission charges made on money donated via credit card.

Yarmouth Beer Raffle (Phillip Feller, July 2008)

The keg of beer donated by Bill Russell of the Black Friars Brewery in Yarmouth was raffled at the town’s carnival on Sunday, June 29, and raised £80 for Friends of GOVI funds.

Successful Overland Journey to Deliver Equipment (Pip Land, Jun 2008)

David Pointon and Ken Nicholas had a successful and busy time in the Gambia after their drive overland in March. Half the proceeds from the sale of the car that they drove overland was given to the school.

World Food Prices Affect GOVI Children's Feeding Fund (Phillip Feller, Apr 2008)

The rise in the cost of food throughout the world is affecting the feeding programme at the school. The cost of rice and cooking oil in the Gambia rose by about 35 per cent between December 2007 and May 2008. The exchange rate between the Dalasi and Sterling has also fallen so the money we send from England buys less.

The Running Man (Phillip Feller, Mar 2008)

Steve Pullinger "the Running Man", Chief Reporter, Archant at Great Yarmouth, is once again running the London Marathon on Sunday 13th April, supporting Friends of GOVI.

Chairman’s Report 2007 (Phillip Feller, Feb 2008)

Overall 2007 was a very successful year. The school with its surrounding buildings and grounds were looking extremely good and sufficient money had come in to cover the cost of food for the feeding programme.

Training Course for GOVI Bus Drivers (Pip Land, Mar 2007)

In March Ken Nicholas ... to run driver-training sessions for the school bus drivers, Jim and Samba.

Workshops for Rehabilitation Workers (Pip Land, Feb 2007)

At the end of February David Pointon spent another week in the Gambia and during that time organised a two-day workshop for the teachers at the school for the blind. He was assisted by Chrissy Ritchie who works in North Yorkshire as a rehabilitation officer for the visually impaired.

Holiday Makers Deliver Braille Machine (Feb 2007)

Barbara and Eric Lawley from Bournemouth offered to carry a Perkins Braille machine when they went on holiday to the Gambia in February 2007.

Chairman’s Report for 2006 (Phillip Feller, Jan 2007)

Not so many visits to the School in 2006, thanks mainly to the work of Lamin Saidy, our Friends of GOVI member. Lamin frequently called at the school liasing with the Head Teacher, Sarjo Bajinka and GOVI Board, finding out any problems or requests for maintenance and stationery requirements.

Mission Accomplished (Pip Land, Jan 2007)

The Dales Team of the Friends of Govi UK delivered two minibuses and a lot of equipment to the school for the blind in the Gambia in December 2006. The minibuses were in good condition after the 3,448 mile journey from North Yorkshire to Serrekunda as were the nine team members.
